Book links:  Amazon ,  Goodreads AUTHOR INFO:   Ryan Kirk is an author and entrepreneur based out of Minnesota. When he isn't writing, he can usually be found getting lost in the woods. Visit his website at  https://ryankirkauthor.com/ Publisher : Waterstone Media (April 26, 2023)  Page Count:  252 (Kindle edition)  Cover art:  100covers ESMAY The Last Fang of God might be short for a fantasy novel, but it certainly doesn’t forget to pack a punch. Filled with meddling gods, warring tribes, complex father/daughter dynamics, powerful rune magic, and visits to mystical realms, this standalone epic fantasy is a wild ride from start to finish. What starts out as a familiar and comfortable epic fantasy story quickly takes a darker and more chaotic turn as the past comes calling. Kalen’s daughter, Sascha, has been called by Kalen’s old master. And not just any master, but none other than the God of his old clan himself. Father and daughter will ha...

SPFBO 9 Finalist review: Cold West by Clayton W. Snyder

Image
Book links:  Amazon ,  Goodreads AUTHOR INFO:   Co-author of SPFBO finalist Norylska Groans, which Anthony Ryan (Blood Song) described as “Rich in bone-crunching violence and a grimly convincing sense of place and character.”, and the final instalment of the Manifest Delusions series, A War to End All. Several of my other novels have been SPFBO semi-finalists. I’ve also authored numerous short stories, my most recent, Hounds, at Grimdark Magazine. I currently split my time between work and writing. I have worked as a systems admin, chainsaw operator, and once did an ill-advised stint as a bodyguard because I am ‘really tall’. Publisher : Clayton Snyder (February 29, 2020)  Page Count:  141 (Kindle edition)  Cover art:  Clayton Snyder ADAM Part revenge thriller, part surreal nightmare, Snyder knocks another one out of the park with the story of a post-war survivor with a few tricks up his sleeve that is hired to do some dirty work....

SPFBO Finalist review: Murder at Spindle Manor by Morgan Stang

Image
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Morgan Stang lives in the humid part of Texas. He graduated from the University of Houston with a BBA. By day he works in accounting and by night he sleeps, and sometime in between he writes in a wide variety of fantasy genres, ranging from dark fantasy (The Bartram's Maw series) to gaslamp murder mystery (The Lamplight Murder Mysteries) to cozy fantasy (The Bookshop and the Barbarian). He is a fan of all things nerdy, and lives with an immortal ball python. Murder at Spindle Manor links:  Amazon ,  Goodreads ADAM This is why I SPFBO. Loved,  loved  this book. A mashup of Agatha Christie, Clue, and John Carpenter's "The Thing" in a single-location murder mystery that starts weird and ends up bananas. Strong, humorous dialogue, a compelling plot that grabs you from one of the best first lines I've read in quite some time, along with an engaging cast of suspects and victims made this an absolute joy to read. ESMAY Agatha Christie-style c...

She currently resides wherever the U.S. Air Force needs her to be. Publisher : Jacquelyn Hagen (September 9, 2022)  Page Count:  440 (Kindle edition)  Cover art:  Miblart REVIEWS ESMAY The Wickwire Watch  is truly unlike anything I have ever read, yet it also gave me all the warm fuzzy nostalgic feels for some of my childhood faves. What starts out as a murder mystery in a Victorian-esque high fantasy world quickly morphs into a character-driven cosy fantasy with steampunk aesthetics and delightful found family vibes, only to take a shocking...

SPFBO Finalist interview: Jacquelyn Hagen, the Author of The Wickwire Watch

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:   Jackie has never had enough of stories. This was perhaps foreseeable, considering that a good deal of her childhood was spent face-deep in books, writing short stories, and putting on goofy and/or dramatic theatrical productions. Then came a growing love for movies, folk music, and classic literature. She graduated college with a degree in Film and Television Production, which led to a brief stint in the entertainment industry. Finding this business incompatible with her super-introverted personality, she looked instead to what stories were being told in the wider world and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Still, the stories never left her alone. In early 2009, in the confines of a small barracks room, a curious boy with a brash attitude and an oversized top hat came to announce that he had a fascinating tale of his own, and he wasn’t going away until she agreed to tell it. She was hesitant at first, but when other intriguing characters began to follow, she reali...
